In 2020, we welcomed Brennan Aerts to the SOP family.
He is the man behind SOP Nashville's operations.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
Nashville, TN with a second adopted home in sunny Los Angeles, CA
WHAT IS YOUR GO TO UNIFORM?
Something happens when you become a father—you start wearing all black. I think it’s the utility of it. It doesn’t show stains, it’s never out of style, it’s acceptable everywhere from the gym to a restaurant to a wedding. You can always default to black. In the winter, my 3sixteen black crewneck fleece over a vintage t shirt (my Blondie and Motorhead ones are my fave), and any good carrot fit black chino.
Since joining SOP, I’m wearing a pair of overdyed Iron Heart 555’s every day. I haven’t worn slim jeans in years, but this cut is so incredibly well designed from the top down. My go to sneaker is the Vans Old Skool, again, because you can fit in anywhere from the rock club to the Rick Owens fashion show. They’re always cool, timeless, comfy, accessible, and appropriate. My go to boots, right now, are a pair of black Viberg x 3sixteen boots that I’ve had since 2015. They’re ready for new soles, but they’ve aged beautifully and they’ve been all over the country with me.
WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR STYLE?
Functional design, utility, silhouette, and comfort are everything. As I spend my weeks balancing my music company, running SOP Nashville, and being a father and husband, I just don’t have time anymore to peruse the depths of the internet for “the next thing” or hard to find vintage pieces or drops, and I certainly don’t have time to overthink how something fits. I love the limitation of throwing on what you know works for you. My style has changed a lot over the years, influenced by environment, economics, location, vocation. But the values always remain the same—functional great design that is comfortable.
FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING THAT YOU’LL NEVER PART WITH:
A Steinhart Ocean Vintage Military watch that my father bought me. It’s nothing fancy—just a great automatic watch. Coming from my Dad is what makes it irreplaceable.
YOU CAN ONLY LISTEN TO ONE RECORD FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. WHAT IS IT?
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue. It’s been statistically my number 1 spun record since 2014.
THREE VIRTUES YOU CAN NEVER STRAY FROM:
- Kindness / Friendliness
- Generosity
- Tact
FAVORITE BOOK:
It’s Not How Good You Are, It’s How Good You Want to Be by Paul Arden
FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL TO:
Palm Springs mid summer when it’s mellow and super hot.
THREE TEACHERS OR TEACHINGS THAT HAVE INFLUENCED YOUR LIFE:
- My dear friend, a creative director named David Blumberg. A man with impeccable taste, a brilliant designer and creative, and an avid coach of how to be kind, live well, be creative, and successful.
- My parents. My mom, who taught me the value of hard work, the value of waiting on nobody to push for what you want, and how to be nothing other than myself in everything I do in life, and how to not be an asshole along the way. My dad who taught me the value of generosity, compassion, and unrelenting drive.
- Dave Pensado’s YouTube Channel. It seems silly, but the music industry, like many, is one of highly difficult access. Even with a father in the industry, there was a lot that was closed off to me before the Youtube education explosion. The teachings from Dave and the professionals he had on his show provided me with invaluable knowledge to grow as a producer from a technical standpoint. It was only once I started learning from this show that I became competitive in the industry and began to earn my accolades, offer real value, and earn real money.
